Monarch Beach Golf Links: Orange County, California’s Premier Golf Destination
Casual surfer vibe meets spectacular SoCal golf and luxurious accommodations
Let’s face it, California has everything: snowcapped mountains, wide-open deserts and mile after mile of picturesque Pacific coastline. Although each region has its charm, golf alongside the ocean is clearly the most appealing. Orange County’s Monarch Beach Golf Links delivers seaside golf infused with a distinctive SoCal vibe.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.
Located in Dana Point, California, Monarch Beach Golf Links’ credentials begin with a household name in the golf world – Robert Trent Jones Jr. – who designed the course to maximize the location’s spectacular views from this 6,600-yard, Scottish links-style course. In fact, if the third hole didn’t dogleg hard left, the green would be on the beach.
“The golf course itself is a pleasure to play in a spectacular setting unique to this corner of the California coast,” said Eric Lohman, PGA General Manager of Monarch Beach Golf Links. “This is especially true when you make time to hang out on the beach or take in the other incredible resort amenities and activities. It’s perfect for anything from family vacations to romantic getaways.”
Course Layout
After the third hole, the routing turns back inland to the challenging, split-fairway, par-5 7th. At a healthy 612 yards from the Championship tees, it’s the No. 1 handicapped hole on the golf course. The only par 5 on the back nine of this par-70 track, No. 12, weighs in at 542 yards, but still earns the fifth spot on the handicap totem pole.
Jones sprinkled in five par 3s and a handful of interesting par 4s featuring the same smooth and fast greens and ample bunkering. Although the elevated value of seaside real estate usually leads to tight fairways, Jones succeeded in creating a layout roomy enough to draw the driver.
Resort Course for Beachcombers
As Lohman mentioned, the recently reimagined Monarch Beach Resort offers a host of rewarding amenities where golfers tee up during the day and tuck in at night. It overlooks a wide swath of the Pacific Ocean with its own private beach where guests are encouraged to explore a multitude of water-borne sports or just relax and let the “Surf Hosts” handle the details. As a AAA Five Diamond rate resort, it features all the indulgent amenities one might expect from luxurious suites to shimmering pools, full-service spa to an extraordinary collection of dining and special event venues (Monarch Beach Resort Photo Gallery). Succinctly put: it’s one of those places where only the best makes the cut.
Friendly Service from Arrival to Departure
“Our facilities are extraordinary, and we take guest service very seriously,” said Lohman. “However, we don’t take ourselves too seriously. The personality of the club is welcoming and casual; we want guests to truly relax and enjoy their stay. Our staff’s engaging, genuine vibe isn’t really something you put on a list of services, but it consistently shows up on guest reviews. We’re very proud of that.”
The Golden State is one of the biggest in the union. Likewise the golf options abound. But when filters such as attentive service, extraordinary views and luxury lodging are applied, only a handful remain. Monarch Beach Golf Links is one of them.
